It’s amazing to think we’ve been able to have this rad event for (almost) 17 years! And we have you to thank dear riders and supporters for being able to help the Big Wheels roll each year. If you know you are going this year, please consider donating now so we can pay for the event. Our cost needs are outlined below.
Sorry for the late update to this year’s event but it’s been a one woman cat herding gig these days and as the song goes “Time Keeps On Slippin’ Into the Future”. Well here we are in the future so let’s seize that flaming 2017 rooster by the horns (what?) and make this thing happen! NEW FOR THIS YEAR: In response to popular demand, 3pm-4pm will be for kids only! (13 and under). The regular event will still be from 4pm-6pm. Another post will list more details.
Here’s the short and bittersweet of it: We have the city permits required to have the event! Yay! With those permits are a whole slew of required things to pay for: event insurance, paid SFPD and Rec and Park officers, city produced signage and porto-poopers. A few other things that cost dosh are hay bales, rider wristbands, and we’d love to have our yearly commemorative sticker.
What does that mean? Ideally we want to make enough donations each year to pay for most of the next year but this year we fell short a few thou from previous years. And we never mentioned the donation bucket stolen from 2015 but we are hoping it went to feed some needy children. Shrug.
Here’s what we need this year to make the event happen:
Please DONATE if you can. I know it’s hard to believe a one-day event that only lasts a few hours can cost this much but sadly this is the case. We will never force people to pay for the funnest time you will ever have so we rely solely on donations (and my pink-collar hourly wage). There may be a t-shirt campaign as soon as we have our 2017 graphics but with those we generally only get to keep half of the cost, which is kind of a bummer. I’m putting together some nostalgia packages of past year’s stickers, the cool patch from 2013 and buttons from way back in 2010 for some donation schwag as well as custom skid mark tighty whitey underwear that is a repro of a rider trophy from 2007. See my butt below for a preview – I promise future ones will be centered. I’ll post another update soon with what is available because they’ll be limited quantities.
Thanks again for helping keep this one-of-a-kind event alive in a city where the once revered weird is becoming extinct.
Cheers,
BYOBW Crew
