We’ve successfully jumped through more hoops of red tape this year than ever before and though costs have gone up we are still determined to keep this a free event. Donate if you can.
RAIN OR SHINE, WE RIDE!
IMPORTANT INFO FOR THIS YEAR: The park next to the races is undergoing some restoration so please respect the fencing! Do not move fencing or cross over into the sensitive areas of the park. There’s plenty of room for everyone on the available area, just get a little cozier with your fellow Big Wheelers and share your snacks.
Members of the media and lovers of Big Wheels! PLEASE DO NOT BLOG OR PUBLICLY POST ABOUT OUR EVENT. WE LOVE POTRERO HILL AND WANT TO KEEP OUR EVENT HERE! We’d love to keep this as a word of mouth/on the down low as much as possible event. We really don’t want PR, SERIOUSLY.
When: March 31st, 2013, Sunday Sunday Sunday!
Where: 20th and Vermont Street in San Francisco, CA
Registration Opens. Come to the registration tent on the corner to check in and get your mandatory racing wristband. ONLINE REGISTRATION IS LIVE!!!!! Online Registration will end at midnight on March 30th. You will still be able to race the next day, just arrive earlier to fill out your registration form on site.    *Under 18 racers need to reg with their parent at the table, so you should download the form and fill it all out in advance to speed up the process*
A $5 donation is recommended, $10 if you want our cool commemorative Lucky 13 patch seen at the top of the post! Cash is best on race day for the patches, but you can also donate through PayPal. If you donate $10 through PayPal and want a patch, come to the reg desk. You’ll be on a list. A good one, we promise. We’ve got a limited number of patches and want to make sure everyone who donates for one is able to get one.
Ceremonial Kids Heat (for the leeeetle kids, toddlers accompanied by their parents)
Adults full on crazy races…weather permitting these usually go til 6pm.
Races End – Clean up
This is a pack it in/pack it out event everyone! Please! Whatever trash you bring, take it home so we can keep the park and street amazing and continue to be allowed back every year! Us organizers spend two hours filling garbage bags and making sure the surrounding streets don’t have trash left, help us by pitching in for a bit after the races.
Parking is a booger! Take public transportation (2 muni stops reeeeally close), catch a cab or carpool and park on 17th Street and walk the couple blocks to the races. The neighborhood doesn’t need the traffic congestion and your calves and butt need a workout anyway. If biking in please don’t lock bikes to the fencing at the children’s playground, there are plenty of street signs to lock to.
When walking back up the hill use the marked paths and stairs! A lot of time is spent planting and restoring the hillside there and want the park to continue to improve. Tread lightly and on the already used areas.Â
Only roll on the blocked street closure! Don’t go rogue Big Wheeling down other streets in the neighborhood. We love this neighborhood and value it’s residents, their sidewalk gardens and their parking sanity so please keep to the Vermont Street race course.
Don’t climb on roofs and private stairs! If you aren’t invited to hang out on someone’s private stairs or roof, don’t take liberties. You are responsible for any damage to property and your own safety. Wear platform shoes if you really need to see that bad.
NO PUBLIC ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION! If you are caught with alcohol by SFPD, you will be cited.
STILL TOTALLY FREE, but we love donations to help cover increasing yearly costs (permits, insurance, SFPD, Park and Rec officers, port-o-potties, etc). We are determined to keep BYOBW TOTALLY Free so please donate if you can.
